GROWING interest in arts among Malaysians has spurred the Tourism Ministry to give more focus to developing art tourism.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said her ministry was constantly looking for various aspects of Malaysia to promote.
Malaysian art was one area that should be highlighted, she said after opening the Art Auction Malaysia at Wisma Bentley Music in Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya recently.

Ng said the country’s first art auction, organised by Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers Sdn Bhd, was an important milestone in the development of art tourism in Malaysia. The event is supported by National Art Gallery.
A preview exhibition of the artworks to be auctioned is being held from now until Saturday for all potential bidders. All the paintings will go under the hammer on Sunday.
Also present at the opening ceremony was Henry Butcher Malaysia group chairman Tan Sri Kamal Hashim, who said a total of 62 paintings worth over RM1mil would be put up for auction.
He said these paintings represented some of Malaysia’s finest pioneer, veteran and contemporary artists including the late Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, Datuk Chuah Thean Teng, Yong Mun Sen, Datuk Mohd Hoessein Enas, Yusof Ghani, Lim Kim Hai and Datuk Sharifah Fatimah Zubir.
“We want to promote Malaysian art and aspire to support Malaysian artists as well as encourage art collection among Malaysians,” added Kamal.
